Turn off 1 of every 10 lightbulbs. We can
live with less light, especially since so much light is wasted.
Part of the climage change challenge is that people need one time efforts that make on-going changes.
For example: People leave lights on when they leave rooms.
Take out a non-critical lightbulb. Once the bulb is removed, it continues to save energy. If a full 10% of all the
bulbs can be removed, there will still be adequate lighting. Changing to the compact florescent bulbs greatly helps as well,
but remove 10% of these as well. Study your house, your office hallways or rooms that are next to big windows but
still have many lights on. Think about rooms and hallways that use more bulbs than is needed for adequate lightin.
It quickly becomes very obvious how over-lit we are. Have your kids or employees participate in this project.
Where the lighting is not critical, it should be possible in large rooms, hallways, along the highways, in parking lots,
etc., for 10% of the bulbs to be permanently turned off.
Remember -- once a bulb is taken out, it is done. How easy to repeat an energy saving move.
Imagine the amount of energy saved if 10% of all the lightbulbs in our country were turned off. Imagine too, how this
is a step in the march to find meaningful ways to make long term energy use reductions, both in practice and
in attitude.
